Project Description

Nearly 20 years before the development of LEED standards, McMichael Middle School incorporated energy-conscious design features and techniques developed through research for the United States Department of Energy and the American Institute of Architects Research Corporation.

The owner realized 50-percent savings in energy costs over conventionally designed schools due to the schools many innovative and forward-thinking design features, including: sloping exterior walls to minimize the exterior surface-to-volume ratios; natural lighting in every classroom; and locating occupancy spaces in areas that would receive valuable solar heat to reduce the use of mechanical heating.
