Project Description

SDG programmed the expanded convention center with a “hall-within-hall” concept – allowing the facility to host a convention while another is setting up and a third is moving out. This fulfilled Cobo’s primary mission of continuously hosting conventions and exhibitions to support the hospitality and business activities in the City of Detroit and in the region.

The expansion of the Cobo was accomplished by extending the existing building to the east, west and north. The project included lowering and reconstructing a major expressway and two heavily used downtown streets. Along the 1,400 foot long concourse, twenty six escalators connect attendees with a wide variety of meeting facilities located on two levels above and one level below the concourse, all within a short walking distance of the exhibition floor.

When the expansion of Cobo was completed, it was the United States’ largest single contiguous exhibition space located entirely on one level.
