Project Description

SDG’s involvement with Cobo Center began with the 1989 expansion spearheaded by then Detroit Mayor, Coleman Young. This expansion added significant space to the original facility and was completed at a cost of $174 million. More than 70,000 square feet of exhibition space as well as 26 elevators, and a 1,400 foot concourse. The second Cobo Center expansion began in 2010 and was completed in 2015. The expansion added a 40,000 square foot ballroom, 21 meeting rooms, and a 30,000 square foot three story glass atrium. The cost of this expansion was $299 million and raised the square footage to 2.4 million, making it the third largest convention center in the country.  The expansion project also added two media mesh video walls to the exterior of the structure which reduces lighting energy costs by 40%. This as well as other Green Initiatives help save Cobo Center more than $3 million per year in energy costs.
