Project Description

The Wright Museum of African American History – the largest institution in the world dedicated to the African-American experience – was designed as a multi-functional community gathering space with exhibit spaces, a fully-equipped 300-seat theater, classroom, educational, meeting and event facilities, and a restaurant. All rooms surround a central 100-foot diameter rotunda crowned by a glazed dome.

The design and detailing of the building combine African and American cultural themes, while the dome, building columns, rotunda, motifs, and door hardware all follow traditional African designs.

The Wright replaced the previous 10-year-old, 27,000 s.f. museum, also designed by SDG, because of an increase in the number of visitors and programming of exhibits and events.
