Project Description

Designed by architect Albert Kahn and constructed in the 1930s, the Argonaut Building was a laboratory facility for General Motors Corporation and is listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places.

SDG collaborated with Albert Kahn Associates on adaptive reuse of the building, converting the facility to a new academic and residential center for the College for Creative Studies. SDG’s role included responsibility for the building shell, a primary element of the historic tax credits secured for the project’s financing. SDG worked closely with the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office to ensure restoration work met the necessary guidelines and completed the required documentation. This project received the 2010 Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation.
