Alternative Energy Fellowship Established at Lawrence Tech

Howard F. Sims, principal, SDG Associates, donated $20,000 to establish the Howard F. Sims Graduate Architectural Fellowship in Alternative Energy Applications. His gift qualifies him for the Benefactors Society.

Case Study: Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School

SDG provided consulting architect services, teaming with TMP Architects for the new addition to Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School in Detroit. The new addition – part of a $500M Detroit Public Schools bond program – replaced  most of the educational facility  and preserved the state-of-the art auditorium wing previously designed by SDG in 1980.

Howard F. Sims, Founder

Throughout his career, Mr. Sims directed the efforts of the firm and individual project teams within the firm on scores of cultural, institutional, transportation, residential, and planning project. Many projects under his direct project planning have been cited by professional and technical societies for outstanding building design.

Projects under his direction include the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the School of Social Work for the University of Michigan, redevelopment and expansion of the campus of the University of Michigan – Dearborn, the historic Stroh River Place development, terminals at Detroit Metropolitan Airport and the UAW-GM Center for Human Resources.

Mr. Sims has served on numerous corporate and community boards and has received citations from many community organizations.

Geoffrey Harrison, Principal

Geoffrey joined the company in 1977. With SDG, he has been responsible for the design of a wide range of projects, including the $174 million Cobo Convention and Exhibition Center and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Both projects have received multiple design awards.

Melvin Cross, AIA, Principal

Melvin joined SDG in 2010 and became a Principal in 2012. Since joining SDG, he has managed the design, preparation of construction documents and construction administration for numerous projects. Prior to joining SDG, Melvin spent 30 years as a project manager and general superintendent with a major international construction firm.

Bill Spinks, Architect

Bill has over 30 years of varied experience ranging over a wide array of architectural project types, including: educational and religious facilities, transportation and light industrial, as well as commercial and resort planning projects. He is involved in these projects from early design phases through the completion of construction. Additionally, he has also worked in the areas of urban planning and urban renewal.

Paul Carr, Architect

Paul’s work ranges from small residential projects to large commercial and educational facilities. He has guided projects from programming and site design to punch list and final closeout while coordinating all aspects of engineering – civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing – throughout the course of a project. Paul’s expertise is in the preparation of all documentation, from design, three-dimensional renderings, and completion of construction documents.

Danna Reyes, Architectural Designer & Urban Planner

Danna is an architectural designer with 10 years of experience in design and construction. She is also an adjunct professor at Lawrence Tech University. Her work includes multi-use office, retail, restaurant and residential, as well as educational and religious facilities. She has background in urban design, including athletic campus site planning, renovation and infill projects. Danna is committed to building sustainability, planned community environments and walkability.

Karen Burton, Business Development Manager

Karen has over 20 years experience in the building industry, providing technical support for medium to large-scale projects, including corporate facilities, sports and entertainment, healthcare, and multi-family residential project types. She also provided interior design and construction documentation services as a member of the project team for the largest building project in the U.S. to date.

Karen has undergraduate degree in Architecture from the University of Michigan and has completed coursework toward a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in marketing from Wayne State University.

Lincoln Calhoun, Architect

Lincoln has provided architectural services from programming, conceptual design through project closeout and post occupancy for various project sectors, including airports, educational facilities, telecommunications, religious, large scale residential new construction and renovations, and commercial facilities. Lincoln’s strengths are in coordinating the project team, preparing contract documents, owners representation, construction administration, and project management.
